It’s the latest move in a broader effort the G.O.P. has undertaken over the past two years to downplay and shift blame for the deadly attack by a pro-Trump mob. The effort to undermine the committee began in earnest when Mr. McCarthy made what many now view as a politically fatal error of withdrawing all of his nominees to the committee after Speaker Nancy Pelosi rejected his first two choices.
