Library Board Targets Spring 2013 Start Date for Library Expansion

Library Board backs expansion project. (Baraboo News-Republic, 10/13/2011)

Excerpt: The library already has about $1.8 million in trust and building funds available, Allen said. The library board would like to see the remaining $6.2 million of the expansion project's cost split evenly between donations and support from the city of Baraboo, she said.

Expansion of the library originally was listed in the city's capital improvement plan as a project for 2012. It shares that list with several other projects slated for the coming decade, including a public safety building (costing about $20 million, to be completed in several phases) and a $4 million science building for Baraboo's University of Wisconsin campus (for which the city would split costs with Sauk County), theoretically in 2015.

Because of the slow economy, state-mandated limits on tax levies and the city's own policy limits on taking on debt, city officials have questioned whether building plans can go ahead as originally anticipated.

Finance Committee member and Alderman Dennis Thurow advised Allen the city might not be ready to contribute $3.1 million for a spring 2013 construction date.
