Health District staff member Stephanie Ruiz said the district is contacting people who may have been in close contact with the person who tested positive. The district is also sharing prevention information with agricultural workers and residents through social media and signage.
Health officials advise people to avoid touching sick or dead animals and to avoid raw milk and unpasteurized dairy products. Pasteurized milk and dairy products are safe to consume, Ruiz said, because pasteurization kills harmful bacteria and viruses, including avian influenza.
The risk to the general public is low at this time, according to health officials. They say transmission between people is rare and has not been documented in the United States.
