This is now. Not an exact roadway match, but it gives a sense of how much change has occurred in 71 years.
Intro to chapter 5:
Two and a half miles west from the New Castle ferry-slips U.S. 40 joins U.S. 13, and the two highways coincide for about a mile. Except for strictly urban development this is the only part of U.S. 40 that at present attains six lanes width, and it is the section that carries the heaviest traffic.
