GET ME REWRITE: GOP lawmakers profess that 'the most effective government is government closest to the people' -- except when it comes to transportation utility fees

Meet the latest group of GOP hypocrites.

As described at the Republican Party of Wisconsin's website....
These commonsense conservative beliefs are the glue that bonds Republicans nationwide.

In 2018, the Neenah City Council passed a resolution creating a transportation assessment replacement fee that charged residential property owners $23 per year. Neenah Mayor and former Republican state Rep. Dean Kaufert said the fee replaced special assessments, wherein homeowners covered a third of the cost of repairs on roads next to their property.
"That, sometimes, was in excess of $4,000 to $5,000 for a homeowner," Kaufert said. "And I had listened to so many people tell me what a burden that was on them."

11/29/2021 update starts here

County officials point to the stagnant shared revenue coming to the county from the state and state legislators' unwillingness to give the county additional ways to raise revenue, including through a local sales tax.
You can send your thank yous c/o the above 6 white guys.

So much for "the most effective government is government closest to the people."

Enter GOP hypocrisy.

Capital Times, 4/28/2021
In the years since, other communities have followed suit. In Green Bay, the water utility removed its last lead pipe in fall 2020, ending a years-long push that ramped up in the wake of the crisis in Flint, Michigan.
But in the Capitol, Republicans have pointed to such local efforts to justify not providing more support for replacing lead lines across the state.

3/12/2021 update. " GOP lawmakers profess that 'the most effective government is government closest to the people' -- except when budgeting for police services", starts here.

Cartoon conservative members
of the Wisconsin legislature

Under the bill, a municipality that decreases its budget for hiring, training and retaining police officers would lose the same amount of money in state support. The plan is a response to a recent push from some activists to cut law enforcement budgets in Wisconsin and across the country. That policy push, sometimes called "defunding the police," has come amid a national conversation about police brutality, criminal justice and systemic racism.

Fredrickson, who was appointed in September by Gov. Scott Walker to serve as judge of Branch 7, called his investiture the “pinnacle” of his career. His first day on the bench was Oct. 15, and Frederickson said he began hearing cases on Oct. 29.

Original 1/12/2019 post, "Scott Walker's toxic legacy:  "Power to the people" hypocrisy" (Taking away local control)", starts here.

Once upon a time, the Republican Party of Wisconsin developed a series of core principles, "commonsense conservative beliefs are the glue that bonds Republicans nationwide."

Unfortunately, for Scott Walker and his GOP grifters in the state legislature, "government closest to the people" is defined as state government.  Power to the people at the county and municipal level?  Fuggedaboudit!!

“From restricting county shoreland zoning ordinances passed by county boards, to banning municipal governments from passing container ordinances that make sense for the well-being of their community, legislative Republicans repeatedly used their majority in a blatant government overreach,” said Shankland.

So when Scott Walker tweets his latest " Send Power to the People" meme, remember his 8 years of power-mongering as governor.

Dear Jim, The GOP war on local control affects EVERYONE.  Village Administrator Jim Healy said the court ruling has broken new, disturbing ground for local governments faced with projects like what he calls "the ironically named" Scenic Pit. The law "was never meant to allow a new business to run in perpetuity," he said. "It's mostly to help state highway projects, for a set duration, not for someone who would open for 2.5 million yards of fill for over a decade."

Which is why Rep. Adam Jarchow (R-Balsam Lake) is the lead sponsor.  Assembly Bill 479 will allow property owners to use and sell substandard lots and comes in response to a June decision by the U.S. Supreme Court that determined a Wisconsin family was not entitled to compensation over development regulations that barred the sale of a lot it owns adjacent to its cottage on Lake St. Croix.
In all 13 GOP members of the Assembly and 5 GOP members of the Senate signed onto the bill.

Headline from Madison.com, 9/28/2017
The change in state law was inserted into the state budget last week. The change supersedes an ordinance the Green Bay area village [Ashwaubenon] adopted a year ago that limited short-term rentals to only 22 properties in the immediate vicinity of Lambeau Field. Owners of those properties also were required to get a permit from the village.
Village officials were concerned that rental homes would spread in response to demand for short-term housing for Packers games — and that would change the village's character.
