A closer look at Wisconsin's population loss: Shawano County

Lumbering in the 19th century fueled the growth of Shawano County into the early 20th century.  Its population initially peaked at 33,975 in 1920.  Since then, the county experienced two stretches of decline (1940 to 1970) and growth (1970 to 2010).  Since the 2010 census, however, the county has lost an estimated 645 residents, or 1.5% of its population.

The city of Shawano is the county seat.

As of July 1, 2014, 18.3% of Shawano County's population is 65 and over, compared to the state average of 15.2%.   Its 0-to-4 demographic is 5.4% vs. the state average 5.9%.
