A closer look at Wisconsin's population loss: Manitowoc County

The population of Manitowoc County grew steadily from its creation in 1836 until 1970.   At this point, its population bobbed just above the 80,000 level.  Since 2000, though, it has lost an estimated 3,081 residents, or 3.7% of its population.

As of July 1, 2014, 18.6% of Manitowoc County's population (16.8% in 2010) is 65 and over compared to a state average of 15.2% (14.5% in 2010).  Its 0-to-4 demographic is 5.2% compared to Wisconsin's 5.9%.

The decline and fall of Manitowoc County's 2 historically largest employers is reflected in its population numbers since 1970.
