What to Do with Charlotte Mecklenburg's Main Library

Shhhhh. Future of the Main Library is in session. Study will tackle options for costly and underused county system flagship. (Charlotte Observer, 11/13/2011)

Excerpt: The debate over how to fix the problem begins at noon Monday, with the first meeting of a committee assigned to find options.

Those could include moving to a smaller building in uptown and selling the North Tryon Street site or moving all nonessential library functions to another site and renting the empty space to raise money.

The committee, jointly appointed by the library and the county, intends to complete its study by April, at which point county commissioners and library trustees will consider the recommendations.

However, all involved admit there will be no easy solutions as the library recovers from last year's $10 million budget cut from the county
