Australia bird flu: Officials considers closing of public areas

Clos­ing pop­u­lar pub­lic areas is likely if the deadly bird flu virus spreads here as it is doing rap­idly across Aus­tralia. 

A spokes­per­son for South Wair­ar­apa, Carter­ton and Mas­ter­ton Dis­trict Coun­cils said clos­ure of pub­lic spaces like Hen­ley Lake in Mas­ter­ton would be an option depend­ing on the impact of bird flu. 

But if the dis­ease takes hold, local and regional author­it­ies and even private landown­ers are expec­ted to be respons­ible for remov­ing dead and dying birds from their land. 

“Landown­ers, includ­ing local and regional author­it­ies, and other gov­ern­ment agen­cies, will be respons­ible for anim­als that are infec­ted or dead from the dis­ease on their land,” said Dr Mary van Andel, the Min­istry for Primary Indus­tries (MPI) chief veter­in­ary officer. 

She said over­seas exper­i­ence showed if H5 bird flu became wide­spread in wild birds here, they could not be pre­ven­ted from spread­ing it.
