Cocks not glocks on the University of Texas-Austin campus

UT students use sex toys to protest campus carry law.  (Austin Statesman, 8/24/2016)
The protest, dubbed “Cocks Not Glocks,” coincided with the first day of classes. Participants strapped the sex toys to their backpacks or handed them out on campus, holding a midday rally to protest the campus carry law that allows concealed-handgun permit holders to take their weapons to most parts of campus.
Event organizers said they hope students will continue to carry the dildos until the law is repealed.

As you would expect, the National Review is not amused.

Tellingly, staff writer David French has to s---t---r---e---t---c---h all the way back to January 16, 2002, to find an example to support his argument.

Adapt 2030 gets caught with its climate denier pants down

Adapt 2030 fantasy.  (Posted on 10/6/2015)

As this Wall Street Journal video reports:
Last summer, about 20 ships passed through the strait, compared with 13 ships in 2013 and only four in 2006.

In Warmer Climate, A Luxury Cruise Sets Sail Through Northwest Passage.  (Wisconsin Public Radio, 8/27/2016)
It has 13 decks, eight restaurants, a casino and a spa. Staterooms start at about $20,000 and run as high as $120,000. And it's about to journey through the Northwest Passage. The Crystal Serenity is the largest cruise ship to navigate from Alaska to New York City, by way of the Arctic Ocean. And as climate change opens up the top of the world, it may be just the first taste of what's to come.

As a luxury cruise ship comes to town, Nome confronts its future.  (Alaska Daily News, 8/23/2016)
Warming temperatures in the Arctic brought about by climate change have transformed the region's once impenetrable ice pack into seasonal open waters that — while still dangerous — are increasingly seen as navigable. Beneville, his blue eyes wide and expressive, speaks with proselytistic fervor of the growth of Arctic shipping and its economic possibilities for Nome, the region and the state.
This visit, as Mayor Richard Beneville put it, is "a game-changer."

First stop Ulukhaktok: Crystal Serenity cruise ship sails into N.W.T.  (CBC News, 8/27/2016)
The weekend the community of Ulukhaktok, N.W.T., has been waiting for has arrived. The Crystal Serenity cruise ship sailed into the hamlet of 400 people on Friday afternoon, bringing with it about 1,000 passengers and 600 crew. It's the largest cruise ship ever to sail through the Northwest Passage, having left Anchorage, Alaska, on Aug. 16 on its way to New York.

Ulukhaktok was known as Holmen until 4/1/2006.

Police sue over new residency rule.  (Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, 8/23/2016)
For decades, all city employees, with few exceptions, had to live within Milwaukee boundaries. In 2013, the state Legislature passed a law that undid all such strict residency requirements but did allow for cities to require certain employees, including police and firefighters, to live within 15 miles of city limits. Milwaukee did not adopt a new rule but instead continued to enforce its longtime rule of residency within city boundaries.

From a Bruce Murphy commentary, Wisconsin’s Growing Teacher Shortage.  (Urban Milwaukee, 8/20/2015)
In Indiana, where the number of people obtaining a teaching license fell by more than 50 percent since 2010, critics of the state’s policies have blamed the growth of private school vouchers and widespread bashing of public school teachers by Hoosier elected officials. Indiana also passed a law reducing collective bargaining rights. Two legislators there have asked for a study of why the teacher shortage of teachers has arisen.  [emphasis added]

Memorial Day weekend 1980: Spread Eagle Chain o' Lakes

The red arrow marks the approximate location.

1312 Spruce Street, Oshkosh Wisconsin: We'll keep the light on for you

I rented the first floor of this house, located in a quiet neighborhood on the north side of Oshkosh -- even with its proximity to the UW-O campus -- from September 1978 until February 1984.  My three landladies -- Josephine, Stella, and Celia Gogolewski; the Gogos, as I inevitably referred to them -- grew up in this house and lived just a few blocks away.  The sisters owned the Lullaby Shop*, an children's and infants' clothing store in the 400 block of Main Street in downtown Oshkosh.  It's where I dropped off my monthly rent check and chatted with them for awhile.

'Jo' sometimes had a gruff, bossy demeanor -- perhaps since she was the oldest of 4 children.  She was born in 1907 and died in 1987.  Stella (1919-2000), the youngest child, always exhibited a more even if just short of sweet temperament, and Celia (1914-1986) was the quiet one, always in the background.  (Oshkosh Public Library/Oshkosh Vital Records Index)

Not to be confused with the Lullabye Shop.

Bice:  Winners, losers from primary.  (Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, 8/11/2016)
Chris Larson — loser: The Milwaukee senator had been the king of the Democratic primary, putting up candidates who could knock off vulnerable candidates who were deemed not sufficiently progressive. But this time, Larson backed at least three candidates — Barnes, Marisabel Cabrera and Darrol Gibson — who all came up short. What's more, Larson's political nemesis, Lena Taylor, will be around for another four years, making for more interesting exchanges between the pair.

Taylor easily defeats Bartnes in primary.  (Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, 8/9/2016)
Barnes announced in March that he would vacate his Assembly seat to challenge Taylor. In doing so, Barnes sought to present himself as a more outspoken and progressive advocate than Taylor, homing in on the two issues where they diverge: gun control and education. Barnes has vocally criticized voucher schools and advocated for the community schools model, and called for greater gun control.

"I understand desperation. I understand, but when you want to lead, you should not be lying to the people," Taylor said.
There were two offending lines on the flier that Barnes sent out. The first reads: "Lena voted with Scott Walker to put more guns on Milwaukee Streets."

Taylor was elected to the 4th Senate District in 2004 and has never before faced a primary challenge. During much of her tenure, Taylor has served on the budget-writing Joint Finance Committee, giving her a chance to help secure funding for her district.
Barnes was elected to the Assembly in 2012 and was the chairman of the Legislature's black and Latino caucus. In his first two races, he ran on a platform centered on reforming public education. This race puts Barnes in an up-or-out position — elected officials in Wisconsin cannot run for two state offices simultaneously.
