Keeping tabs on authors in LINKcat: Maureen Howard

New York Times, 3/15/2022
Ms. Howard’s novels, some of which took Irish American assimilation as a theme, often featured women confronting challenges in marriage and society. Three successive midcareer works, “Grace Abounding” (1982), “Expensive Habits” (1986) and “Natural History” (1992), were finalists for the prestigious PEN/Faulkner Award.
Her final four books, as she described them, were thematically a seasonal quartet — first winter with “A Lover’s Almanac” (1998), then spring with “Big as Life” (2001), summer with “The Silver Screen” (2004) and, finally, autumn with “The Rags of Time” (2009). Paul Slovak, her editor on those four books, which were published by Viking, said by email that Ms. Howard’s works “featured an ambitious interplay of history, politics, art and life as they tracked the stories of families and especially of spirited, formidable women, providing a broad take on American life over the last 60 years.”

Climate change as a matter of fact: Red-hot Antarctica

(red box added)

Washington Post, 3/18//2022
“Antarctic climatology has been rewritten,” tweeted Stefano Di Battista, a researcher who has published studies on Antarctic temperatures. He added that such temperature anomalies would have been considered “impossible” and “unthinkable” before they actually occurred.
Parts of eastern Antarctica have seen temperatures hover 70 degrees (40 Celsius) above normal for three days and counting, Wille said. He likened the event to the June heat wave in the Pacific Northwest, which scientists concluded would have been “virtually impossible” without human-caused climate change.

'Antarctica Melts,' NASA Says, Showing Effects Of A Record Warm Spell.  (NPR, 2/21/2020)
The photos center on Eagle Island, part of the northern tip of the Antarctic Peninsula that stretches toward South America. Satellites took the images just nine days apart, on Feb. 4 and Feb. 13. But dramatic changes took place in that time span. Two days after the first photo was taken, the area hit 18.3 degrees Celsius (64.9 degrees Fahrenheit) — matching that day's temperature in Los Angeles, NASA notes.
"The warm spell caused widespread melting on nearby glaciers," the space agency says. "Such persistent warmth was not typical in Antarctica until the 21st century, but it has become more common in recent years."

Capital Times, 12/16/2021
Hesselbein, 50, said she will step down from her role as assistant minority leader, adding that it is "critical for (her) colleagues to have a leadership team in place that is solely focused on building a strong Assembly caucus for the next legislative session."
Hesselbein's announcement follows the news that Erpenbach, 60, won't seek reelection in 2022 after more than two decades representing the 27th Senate District, and that Assembly Minority Leader Gordon Hintz, D-Oshkosh, will step down from his leadership post in January.
A Dane County native, Hesselbein attended La Follette High School, graduated from the the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh, and earned a master’s degree in religious studies at Edgewood College. She and her husband Bob, and their three children, live in Middleton.

“It is time for me to make way for a new generation of progressive and pragmatic leaders from a part of the state that has produced so many,” Bewley, who is the leader for the Senate’s Democrats, said in a statement released Tuesday.
Bewley said she would hold on to her leadership post through the rest of the 2021-22 legislative biennium.

Trump received 1,500 more votes than he did in 2016, a 11% increase.

Biden received 3,386 more votes than Clinton did in 2016, an increase of 26%.

Trump's share of the vote increased by 0.6 percentage points.  Biden decreased Clinton's share of the vote by 6.6 percentage points.

Star Tribune, 3/12/2022
In 1990, Peterson said 31 legislative Democrats served within the boundaries of the Seventh District. Now there are three. Fewer than a half-dozen Democrats serve in the entire 134-seat state House who represent truly rural districts, and only a couple in the state Senate, a reality that has shut the party out of power in the chamber since 2016.
