100 Years of Frank Sinatra: "Saturday Night (Is the Loneliest Night of the Week)"

Frank Sinatra recorded "Saturday Night" for Columbia Records in New York City in November 1944, with an arrangement by Axel Stordahl, who, according to Steve Huey,  is often credited with helping to bring pop arranging into the modern age.   The timeless sound of "Saturday Night" clearly supports this observation.

The Popular Song website ranks it as #20 among the top 40 popular songs of 1944.

The song was written by Sammy Cahn and Jules Styne ("Five Minutes More", Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!", .

For Dad, Saturday night was oftentimes reserved for contemplation, as he reviewed the content, one last time, of his Sunday sermon.

Here he is on a November Monday afternoon at Jackson Park in Seattle with 2 fellow pastors and 4 theological interns.  Dad's bachelor days would soon be over.

Scott Walker's Freedom to Go Bald

Photo credit:  Wisconsin Office of the Governor

Here's how it happened.
Walker went on to say he was fixing something in the kitchen — he doesn't say when — and hit his head on the cabinet. His wife, Tonette, repeatedly urged him to see a doctor, and when he finally did he was told his head would not be growing hair anymore in that area. He said Tonette cited this as proof that it's best to listen to your wife.

News(papers), the first draft of history; social media, the first rant of history

Journalist Alan Barth made the statement,
"News is only the first rough draft of history"

in a 1943 book review published in The New Republic. Variations on this comment have been made ever since.

Based on the explosive initial reaction to Starbucks' Race Together campaign, I offer a companion statement.
"Social media is the first rant of history."

With Twitter leading the way.

Here's an example of the former.

Print headline:  "Starbucks Faces Fury Online Over Race Conversation"

Here's an example of the latter.

Police Make Arrest After a Roaming Gunman Kills One in a Phoenix Suburb.  (The New York Times, 3/18/2015)
They prompted a four-hour manhunt, with SWAT teams from the local Police Department and several other area agencies swarming the neighborhood, knocking on doors, stopping and searching cars, tramping through yards, peering over fences and telling terrified residents to stay inside.

John R. Lott, Jr., founder of the Crime Prevention Research Center and author of More Guns Less Crime, probably fits many people's definition of a gun nut.

And his research will promote his views until you pry his laptop from his cold, dead hands.

Scott Walker in South Carolina: How many square feet does a gathering of 'about 200 people' require?

Walker courts conservatives, religious in South Carolina.  (Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, 3/19/2015)

'Direct' is not in his vocabulary.
In a speech to about 200 people at the TD Convention Center in Greenville, Walker indirectly addressed the departure of social media aide Liz Mair after news spread about tweets she posted before she was hired that disparaged Iowa and its caucuses, the first in the nation.
