America’s standing in the world is at a low ebb. Once described as the indispensable nation, the United States is now seen as withdrawn and inward-looking, a reluctant and unreliable partner at a dangerous moment for the world. The coronavirus pandemic has only made things worse.
President Trump shattered a 70-year consensus among U.S. presidents of both political parties that was grounded in the principle of robust American leadership in the world through alliances and multilateral institutions. For decades, this approach was seen at home and abroad as good for the world and good for the United States.
In its place, Trump has substituted his America First doctrine and what his critics say is a zero-sum-game sensibility about international relationships. America First has been described variously as nationalistic, populistic, isolationist and unilateralist. The president has demeaned allies and emboldened adversaries such as China and Russia.

It was nearly impossible to follow the President's logic this week when he expressed fresh concern about the safety of convention-goers in Jacksonville, Florida, but in the same briefing argued that parents should not be worried about sending their children back to school or bringing the virus home.
He acknowledged Thursday that schools in some hotspots may need to delay reopening until infection rates come down, and said his administration was asking Congress to provide $105 billion in the next stimulus bill to schools that reopen, while in districts that don't reopen, he's requesting the money "go to the parents" so they can decide whether to send their children to private or charter schools.
But his threats to tether funding to school districts' willingness to reopen is quickly becoming the next political battle of wills between Trump and local officials.

"I think setting the example is very important. It's hard for us to say we're going to have a lot of people packed in a room, and then other people shouldn't do it,"
Trump told reporters Thursday. What the president did not acknowledge in making the surprise announcement Thursday was that his sudden concern with setting the right example represented a complete 180-degree shift.
The president expressed no such concerns back in June, when he demanded that the Republican National Committee find a location for him to deliver a large-scale traditional address free of the public health restrictions,

The anchor of Trump's new, punchier briefings is a scripted opening in which he cherry picks the most hopeful aspects of a pandemic that has destroyed the rhythm of American daily life and turned the economy upside down. Wednesday was yet another tragic day, with another 1,195 new deaths and 71,695 fresh infections.
In his two briefings so far, his rejigged approach seems more like a cosmetic political exercise than an attempt to provide the country with meaningful public health advice as the pandemic gets worse.

CNBC, 7/21/2021

In the 5th month of the pandemic!
The virus “is a vicious and dangerous illness, but we’ve learned a great deal about it and who it targets,” the president said.
“We are in the process of developing a strategy that’s going to be very, very powerful. We’ve developed as we go along,” he said. “Some areas of our country are doing very well, others are doing less well.”
Trump then laid out a list of actions his administration has taken, such as boosting the availability of tests for the virus and deploying thousands of National Guard members to states dealing with the most severe outbreaks.

July 21, 2020.   U.S. total Covid deaths = 146,664 (+1,176), which is 24.1% of current total.

July 21, 2021.  U.S. total Covid deaths = 608,717, (+249)

Fact:  The Trump administration didn't know what the fuck they were doing.

We have tremendous progress on vaccines and therapeutics. We're getting reports. We're studying the reports very closely. I think people are going to be very pleasantly surprised with what's going on on the vaccine front and the therapeutic front. And that, to us, is always the first topic.

Oh, there was no surprise.

Cases and hospitalizations are spiking in many parts of the United States. While the number of tests conducted has risen, new confirmed cases are rising at a faster rate than tests. But Trump again falsely asserted that testing is to blame for the spike in identified infections.
"Cases are up. Many of those cases shouldn't even be cases," Trump told interviewer Chris Wallace. "Cases are up because we have the best testing in the world. ... I'm glad we do [testing], but it really skews the numbers." He added: "We're creating trouble."

Both of Trump's two most frequent individual false claims during the four-week period were about the pandemic.
Trump made 15 false claims about the relationship between testing and cases -- claiming that testing is responsible for the recent spike in confirmed cases, that testing is causing cases to exist or something similar. (You can click here for a detailed explanation of why his assertions are false.) And he falsely claimed nine times that he had banned travel from China, though he imposed only a partial travel restriction; he has now made versions of this "ban" claim 67 times, more than any other pandemic-related false claim.

Not only is Trump refusing to act in a manner appropriate to the magnitude of the emergency, he is using the country's loudest megaphone in a way almost guaranteed to make it worse, from presiding over a White House campaign to discredit the lifelong work of Dr. Anthony Fauci -- a new front in his war on science and truth -- to undermining efforts by local officials to convince people to wear masks to slow the spread of the disease.

The White House press secretary, Kayleigh McEnany, on Thursday reiterated President Trump’s view that schools must open in the fall. “When he says open,” she said, “he means open and full, kids being able to attend each and every day at their school. The science should not stand in the way of this.”
