A New Day's Dawning for Wisconsin Frac Sand Operators

Not much more than an excuse to share this Mama Cass video from a 1970 appearance on The Johnny Cash Show.

Cass Elliott's "New World Coming" spent 7 weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 in early 1970, its final 3 stuck at #42.  (Alternative version.)

Wisconsin frac sand firms stung by falling oil prices. (Wisconsin State Journal, 1/8/2015)
But Doug Sheridan, an analyst at EnergyPoint Research, tells the Journal that sand companies should be following the lead of other oil-field-service companies like Halliburton Co. and Schlumberger Ltd. that have announced cutbacks and workforce reductions.

“Sitting on your hands and waiting isn’t what the veterans do,” he warns. “There are a lot of wide-eyed people out there right now in the industry.”

Marty Lehman, president of Badger Mining Corporation in Berlin in Green County*, admits the sand industry in Wisconsin isn’t used to the ups and downs of the energy business.

*That would be Green Lake County

Palm Beach County Library System to Replace 10-Year-Old Bookmobile Thanks to $225,000 Anonymous Donation

Thus affirming the value of this outreach service.

PBC getting new bookmobile, thanks to $225,000 donation.  (Palm Beach Post, 1/9/2015)
Crane said the $225,000 donation is one of the largest contributions ever to Friends of the Palm Beach County Library System, the non-profit group that promotes the library.

“The private donor, who wished to remain anonymous, said he was inspired to donate to the library by the example of businessman turned philanthropist Andrew Carnegie, who built public library buildings through the United States in the early 20th century,’’ Crane said in a memo to county commissioners

The county currently has one bookmobile, in use since 2005. It is nearing the end of its lifespan, Crane said, “so the donation came at an ideal time.’’

When I saw the first Withings smartwatch a few months ago, I did a double take. What is that? It looks beautiful and awesome. I want it. But when the representative told me the about the $450 price tag, I slowly placed the Swiss-designed wonder back on the rack. At CES2015, the Activité Pop delivered a similar attention to design at a much more wallet-friendly $150.

Designed in Paris!  (Although the action in this next video takes place in San Francisco.)

Kentucky and Indiana can expect even more heat waves, bigger and badder storms and poorer air and water quality in the decades ahead because of global warming, according to a new nationwide report from scientists to Congress and the president.

Climate change:  A brief summary for Kentucky Extension agents.  (Cooperative Extension Service, University of Kentucky College of Agriculture.
In conclusion, keep in mind that nearly all climate science experts agree that global warming is occurring and that it is caused primarily by human ac - tivity. Regardless of what you may read on blogs or in the media, there is almost no meaningful scientific controversy on these points. The future impacts of global warming are difficult to predict, but the changes caused by greenhouse gases are expected to increasingly affect Kentucky agriculture.
