New York's 14th congressional district: Archie Bunker doesn't live here anymore

It's Not Archie Bunker's District Anymore.  (City Journal, 6/28/2018)
[James] Delaney’s views, particularly on social issues, reflected those of the then-heavily white, Catholic, and blue-collar congressional district, which voted strongly for John F. Kennedy over Richard Nixon in 1960 but three-to-one for Nixon over George McGovern in 1972. The opening-credits scene for All in the Family was filmed there, in Glendale. But the district, and the Queens Democratic Party, were already changing when Delaney retired in 1978 and Ferraro won an upset primary victory (over Manton) in the race to succeed him.

Atlantic City offers yet another bridge for sale

Can Sports Betting Do for Atlantic City What Donald Trump Couldn’t?  (The New York Times, 6/25/2018)
Donald Trump is now running the federal governemnt like he ran his businesses:  recklessly, imperiously.  The president, then a casino impresario, opened the Trump Taj Mahal, the biggest gambling venue on the boardwalk, with great fanfare and at a cost of $1.2 billion in 1990, only to have it collapse into bankruptcy the following year. After years of decline, it shut down in 2016, seemingly consigned to symbolize the ruinous excess here during the Trump era.

Atlantic City's population peaked in 1930.

Congressman Kennedy has not allowed the church teachings to alter his political position, but it is certain that there are members of Congress whose political decisions are based on the teachings received from pulpit, Sunday school, or the particular scriptures to which they subscribe. These teachings - beliefs - truths - may make the holder a better person but may at the same time interfere with the ability of that person to base his or her secular political decisions on the requirements of the law, the Constitution, or fair and impartial reading of legislative proposals.

Under Trump, Wisconsin dairies struggle to keep immigrant workers.  (, 3/19/2017)
Now living with their two young children on a Pepin County dairy farm in northwestern Wisconsin where Manuel works, the couple — who asked that their real names not be used because of their immigration status — are making plans to leave their life in America’s Dairyland and go back across the border, much sooner than they had expected.
Jiménez says she has also noticed a change in the way her family is treated in the community. “There have always been racist people. That’s nothing new. They’ve always been there. But it’s like now people feel more free to be offensive or do things that aren’t right,” Jiménez says. In a recent incident, Manuel was filling up his tank at a gas station when a group of men dressed in hunting gear stopped to insult him. His wife declined to repeat the remarks, which she described as “ugly.”

Some triumph: The Trump effect scrounges up an additional 3,435 votes for Henry McMaster in South Carolina

Source:  Ballotpedia

2018 primaries: Key takeaways as Democrats get a shock and Trump triumphs.  (USA Today, 6/27/2018)
Trump made it clear to supporters when he flew through a thunderstorm Monday night to lead a rally for Gov. Henry McMaster that if the governor was not nominated for another term, the "fake news" would take it out on Trump. South Carolina came through for the president, giving McMaster a win in a runoff against businessman John Warren.

Overall, 24,690 fewer voters found their way to the polls for the runoff election, a drop of 7.2% from the primary election.  Can't say that Trump lit a fire here.

Dear Scott Walker, Will you stand up to Donald Trump tomorrow in support of Wisconsin's cheesemakers?

“If export markets get shut off, I could see us getting to the point where we’re dumping our milk in the fields,” said Jeff Schwager, the president of Sartori Company, which has produced cheese in a nearby town for generations with milk it purchases from more than 100 dairy farms throughout Wisconsin. “It’ll be a big ripple effect through the state.”
