A veteran reporter explains why network news is a waste of time

Reported in Major news networks are failing to explain that Hurricane Harvey was fueled by climate change.  (Quartz, 9/9/2017)
Holding on to yesterday.  Network newscasts have huge viewerships [9 million for NBC and ABC], but they are generally terrible at covering climate change. In 2016, the three major networks and Fox spent a grand total of 50 minutes on the carbon crisis. ABC, the worst offender, dedicated exactly six minutes to climate change and interviewed a total of zero climate scientists.

Twenty-seven million to 29 million viewers, on average, tuned in every night to hear Walter Cronkite on the CBS Evening News. Today, though, the viewership of evening news programs on CBS, NBC and ABC combined is smaller than CBS’ when Cronkite sat in the anchor’s chair. In a 2008 survey conducted by the Pew Research Center, just 8% reported regularly watching Katie Couric on the CBS Evening News broadcast.

Survey says....the GOP has a Trump divide

The GOP has a Trump divide.  (Axios, 9/7/2017)
A new Wall Street Journal/NBC News poll revealed deep divisions amongst Republicans — based on if they cast their primary vote for President Trump — on some of the most hot-button issues facing the United States today.

It should come as no surprise to you to learn that Trump voters are on the bottom of the lists in the % comfortable.  This NBC News graph illustrates why Trump's anti-immigration message was so effective during the 2016 presidential campaign.

Greetings from the Golden Gate Bridge, from the people who swim beside it

From Retiring Guy's postcard collection

Chilly waves, advancing years can’t stop Golden Gate swimmers.  (San Francisco Chronicle, 9/8/2017)
You have a feeling of how small we are and how big the forces of nature are,” said Laura Burtch, who has made the Golden Gate swim many times. “When you swim the Golden Gate it is really clear that you are into something big. There is a meeting place of the bay and a very large ocean. It is so beautiful, and it is never the same.”
The course runs from Fort Point in San Francisco to Lime Point in Marin, seven-eighths of a mile.

Greetings from San Francisco's Chinatown, home of the $52 Scotch cocktail

From Retiring Guy's postcard collection

There's A $52 Scotch Cocktail In Chinatown Now.  (sfist, 9/7/2017)
And topping the menu, price-wise, is a $52 cocktail called the Royal Salute Rob Roy — a spin on the classic Rob Roy using the pricey Chivas Royal Salute 21-year, which can retail for upwards of $180 a bottle, and Glenlivet 12-year, along with Lustau and Chinato vermouths and bitters. It's an expense-account choice to be sure, or one for a baller type trying to impress a date, maybe, and as Mobley writes, "Would I order it again if I weren’t expensing it for a review? No."  (China Live)

Original 1/9/2016 post, "Scott Walker on education:  Students are our future", starts here.

The Walker BS-o-meter continues to get a workout.

This blather from a Governor who made cuts to education funding a priority from the start of his 1st term in office.
According to an analysis by the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, at least 19 states cut education funding by more than 5 percent between 2010–11 and 2011–12. Four states—Illinois, Kansas, Texas and Wisconsin—cut spending by 10 percent or more.  (Source:  The Council of State Governments)

Missoula residents will rate this the worst list of "Worst Cities to Live in Every State"

Overall, Missoula gets a grade of A- at Niche.

Where it looks as though 24/7 Wall Street has already weighed in.

And on another front, a website called Neighborhood Scout, there's this thoroughly generic observation.
Because there are quite a few people attending college in Missoula [Ames, Amherst, Fayetteville, Iowa City, Lincoln, State College], it is thought of as a college town. To the benefit of the many students in the area, Missoula [Ames, Amherst, Fayetteville, Iowa City, Lincoln, State College] provides a number of services, amenities and opportunities geared towards their needs and activities.

Perhaps one of the best albums from the early 1970s you've never heard.  (Although it's likely you've heard other artists cover his songs.)

In 1963, Betty Friedan had called the “feminine mystique” the problem with no name. It was Ms. Millett who gave it a name — sexual politics — and explained its cause: patriarchal society. By introducing the concept of “patriarchy as a political institution,” she equipped her readers to become their own theorists of culture. Ms. Millett revolutionized our thought by helping us to perceive the power structures in what had previously been cast as apolitical terrain: the home; literature; romantic relationships.

Today, only 43% of Americans identify as white and Christian, and only 30% as white and Protestant.

White evangelical Protestants were once thought to be bucking a longer trend, but over the past decade their numbers have dropped substantially

Approximately six in ten white evangelical Protestants (62%), white Catholics (62%), and white mainline Protestants (59%) are at least 50 years old.
Muslims, Buddhists, and Hindus each constitute only 1% of the public.

High Point Road bridge over Beltline to be replaced; traffic detoured for 7 months.  (Wisconsin State Journal, 2/2/2017)
The narrow two-lane bridge currently traversing the Beltline isn’t wide enough to accommodate four lanes of traffic, so the existing structure will be taken out and a new one erected.
The project will also include new bicycle lanes in both directions, and sidewalks on both sides, including a new sidewalk on the west side of the street, from the bridge to the D’onofrio Drive intersection.

Molly persevered throughout the 20th century, eventually working her way into the top 100 in 1987, where she spent 22 years (1987-98, 2000-01, 2003-05, 2007, 2009-12), peaking at #74 in 1991.  She has since slid to where she was in the mid-1970s.
