LOCK HIM UP!!

New York Times, 11/5/2021
The conclusions of the inspector general’s report were in line with previous disclosures about sloppy record keeping and poor oversight by the Trump administration when it came to gifts given to and received from foreign leaders.
The report said that the missing gifts include a 30-year-old Suntory Hibiki bottle of Japanese whiskey given to Secretary of State Mike Pompeo worth $5,800; a 22-karat gold commemorative coin valued at $560 given to another State Department official, and monogrammed commemorative pewter trays, marble trinket boxes, and leather portfolios. The monogrammed items were created to give away at a Group of 7 summit meeting in 2020 that was canceled because of the pandemic.

The Trump Organization filed a highly exaggerated claim of nearly $1.3 million for damages to a golf course that cost only a fraction of the payout, insiders familiar with the matter have claimed. Sources that asked not to be identified reached out to Rolling Stone, saying that when a flood occurred at Trump National Golf Club Westchester in Briarcliff Manor, NY in 2011, the company made a claim for almost $1.3 million. However, the two insiders said that Trump Organization spent only about $130,000 to $150,000 for the actual repairs to the golf course.

The Capitol was under siege — and the president, glued to the television, did nothing. For 187 minutes, Trump resisted entreaties to intervene from advisers, allies and his elder daughter, as well as lawmakers under attack. Even as the violence at the Capitol intensified, even after Vice President Mike Pence, his family and hundreds of Congress members and their staffers hid to protect themselves, even after the first two people died and scores of others were assaulted, Trump declined for more than three hours to tell the renegades rioting in his name to stand down and go home.  [emphasis added]

No two ways about it.

This guy is a one major-league dim bulb.

Newsweek, 11/5/2021
"We are paying for the government to care for 3- and 4-year-olds," Grothman said during Friday's discussion. "Traditionally, in America, the raising of the children is the responsibility of the parents. I know there are people, Marxists, who believe raising children is the responsibility of the state."

Politico, 10/26/2021
It’s safe to say that Republican Rep. Glenn Grothman of Wisconsin is not the brightest bulb on the marquee. While a member of the Wisconsin state Senate, Grothman proposed putting an end to weekends, said sex education could turn kids gay, once issued a press release titled “Why Must We Still Hear About Kwanzaa?” and on one occasion wondered if people in the ’70s even knew what homosexuality was: “I don’t remember any discussion about that at the time,” he stated. “There were a few guys who would make fun of a few effeminate boys, but that’s a different thing than homosexuality. Homosexuality was not on anyone’s radar. And that’s a good thing.”

9/16/2021 update starts here

Wisconsin Republican Rep. Glenn Grothman tried unsuccessfully to remove the universal pre-kindergarten provision from the package in committee, saying he doesn’t believe it benefits children enough to warrant the cost to taxpayers.
“Preschool is not all it’s cracked up to be,” Grothman said. “This is a big step toward the government assuming more responsibility toward raising the kids.”

A spokeswoman for Mr. DeSantis said he had not played any role in the university’s actions. “This is an internal U.F. issue and not the sort of thing that the executive branch would be involved in,” the spokeswoman, Christina Pushaw, said. “Governor DeSantis has always championed free speech, open inquiry and viewpoint diversity on college and university campuses.”

Expanded use of Wisconsin wheel tax is a Scott Walker legacy

Current wheel tax jurisdictions

The reason is simple: Wheel taxes are one of the few types of fees local governments can raise at their discretion. The [Republican-controlled] Legislature for years has kept a tight lid on how much they can increase property taxes, limiting their ability to deal with rising costs. In 2011, just four communities had wheel taxes. By early next year, that will have risen to 44, according to the policy forum.
That and Foxconn. (Buy-bye, Li'l Scooter!)

GET ME REWRITE: Political pundits drive off cliff, crash into trees

It's another Case of the Quadrennial Democrats.

In the 2021 gubernatorial election, Glenn Youngkin received 303,739 fewer votes than Trump did in the presidential election, a drop of 15%.

In the 2021 gubernatorial election, Terry McAuliffe received 834,165 fewer votes than BIden did in the presidential election, a drop of 35%.

Pontificate all you want.  An inability to get out of the vote in a non-presidential election year is the key problem for Democrats.

Rachel Maddow to pundits:  Calm down.
“Honestly, what happened here,” Maddow began, “for the past 30 years, every single time we’ve had a new president, that first year of the new president, the president’s party lost both the Virginia governor and New Jersey governor, every single time, except this time the Democrats didn’t lose New Jersey. In a rational world, this would not be a cause for democratic panic. Quite the contrary. Democrats have beat the odds. They’ve done everything that the great communicator, Ronald Reagan did.”
“Last night, for the first time since the 1980s, Republicans weren’t able to flip those two governorships like the opposing party has been able to do in the first year of every new presidency going all the way back to Poppy Bush. They only got one. Dems held onto the other. Why this scenario should be cause for Democratic freakout is beyond me. I mean, if you’re a Democrat and you enjoy freaking out, knock yourself out. Be my guest. But rationally, big picture, you would rather be the party of Joe Biden than the party of Donald Trump right now.”  [emphasis added]

Could you run that by me again, please?

Youngkin played his cards carefully craftily, avoiding some of the bread-and-butter Republican issues like Second Amendment rights and abortion in favor of fearmongering racist dog whistles about critical race theory, which is not actually being taught in primary schools, and “election integrity,” nodding toward Trump’s claims of a stolen election while still assuring establishment Republicans that he upheld democracy and believed Joe Biden’s presidency is legitimate.

 It's a off-year election, people.  It's not a referendum on anything.

Moreover, way too many Democrats sat this one out.  McAuliffe received 825,450 fewer voters than Biden in 2020, a decrease of 34%

Youngkin received 294,312 fewer votes than Trump in 2020, a decrease of 15%.

Call it "The Case of the Quadrennial Democrats".  Wisconsin has 72 of them.
