This week in the cereal aisle: Chocolate Frosted Flakes

REVIEW: Kellogg’s Chocolate Frosted Flakes.  (The Impulsive Buy, 1/23/2018)
While not as good as Cocoa Pebbles, I have to say Kellogg’s Chocolate Frosted Flakes is as good as or better than Cocoa Puffs. It’s also way better than the previous incarnation of chocolate-flavored Frosted Flakes, which had a weak cocoa punch.

Or....you could just skip breakfast and watch this campy dreg from 1965

Around Town: Tiedeman Pond winter fish kill

My wife and I have never seen a sight like this on any of our walks during the time we have lived in Middleton.

Photos by Retiring Guy

The likely culprit.

From the Winter Fish Kills Fact Sheet published by the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection:
WINTER FISH KILLS: Are generally caused by a depletion of dissolved oxygen. Winter kills occur most frequently in very shallow, nutrient rich ponds that are subject to abundant growth of aquatic plants and algae. Conditions conducive to winterkill arise when heavy snow cover over ice inhibits sunlight penetration, thereby preventing aquatic plants and algae from producing oxygen via photosynthesis. This process is the sole means of oxygen creation under ice-covered ponds.

Tiedeman is a very shallow, nutrient rich kettle pond.

Question of the day: When are there not rush hours at Mickie’s Dairy Bar?

30 plates that define Madison: The Scrambler at Mickies Dairy Bar.  (Wisconsin State Journal, 9/19/2015)
Why it defines Madison: Mickies has been a Madison institution since 1946. The Thongnuams sustain the cozy, hometown, Mom-and-Pop diner feel of the original establishment that encourages people to “step back in time” and savor a hearty, filling breakfast.
Mickie's Dairy Bar serves up Madison nostalgia by the short stack.  (Capital Times, 1/14/2014)
As new owners, the Thongnuams didn't change much. From the 50s-era menus on the wall (complete with prices in cents, not dollars) to the vintage Wisconsin Badger figures that flank the dining room, the Thongnuams' Mickie's retains the charm and flavor of its history while incorporating newer traditions, like the hot sauce that's available upon request.

Refusing to follow the law, a whining Scott Walker suffers the consequences

It’s a familiar story by now. Two legislators, one from the Assembly and one from the Senate, resigned on Dec. 29, 2017, in order to take jobs working in Gov. Scott Walker’s administration.
What Walker should have done next is made clear by state law: “Any vacancy... occurring before the second Tuesday in May in the year in which a regular election is held to fill that seat shall be filled as promptly as possible by special election.”

What Walker should have done is exactly what he did 6 weeks earlier, when he appointed State Senator Sheila Harsdorf to serve as secretary of the Department of Agriculture, Trade, and Consumer Protection.

"One Tin Soldier (The Legend of Billy Jack)", by one-hit wonder Coven, debuted at #87 on the Billboard Hot 100 for the week ending September 18, 1971.  It spent 12 weeks on the chart, peaking at #26, although in my memory it received enough radio airplay to seem like a top 10 hit.  Two reissues in 1973, a new recording and the original, generated little listener interest.

Rob Porter’s History of Domestic Abuse Wasn’t a Secret. It’s Just That No One Cared.  (Slate, 2/8/2018)
A MERE ALLEGATION.  SINGULAR.  Until Wednesday, Rob Porter was the White House staff secretary. Long before Wednesday, many of the people to whom he reported knew he had physically abused and assaulted both of his wives. Colbie Holderness, Porter’s first wife, and Jennifer Willoughby, Porter’s second wife, both told the FBI their marriages had ended because of a pattern of physical and emotional abuse. According to their accounts, supported by photos, contemporaneous reporting to others, and a blog post written by Willoughby last April, Porter kicked these women, he punched and choked one of these women, he blackened one of these women’s eyes. He berated and insulted these women. Police were called. But Rob Porter is also white, and the son of a prominent academic and thinker. He went to Harvard and Oxford, and he had a high-ranking job in the Oval Office, and was reportedly pressing for a higher one. He was dating Hope Hicks, one of the president’s closest confidantes. So nobody did a thing about the allegations.

Skepticism over the smart kitchen goes back at least 18 years

To Invade Homes, Tech Is Trying to Get in Your Kitchen.  (The New York Times, 3/25/2018)
Yet the so-called smart kitchen remains a tough sell. With the kitchen often a hub for families and friends, habits there can be hard to change. And many people see the kitchen and mealtimes as a haven from their otherwise always-connected lifestyle. Only 5 percent of American households own smart appliances today, up from 3 percent in 2014, according to the research firm Parks Associates.
“Will we see a reinvention of the kitchen like we saw in the living room?” said Michael Wolf, a tech analyst who hosts a podcast and a conference about the smart kitchen. “I don’t think it will happen overnight. There’s going to be a lot of skepticism.”

    The downsides:
    1. Purchase cost
    2. Maintenance costs
    3. Expensive components (e.g., touch screens)
    4. Difficulty to repair
    5. Longevity (talk to any appliance repair person about this topic)
