USA box office for the 16th weekend of 2025

 

USA box office on the 16th weekend of 2025 is up 80% compared to last year when "Civil War" was the top-grossing movie.  "Sinners" is the top-grossing film this weekend. 

But it's down 27% compared to the peak year of 2017, when "The Fate of the Furious" ruled the box office.

Brooks Barnes reports:

But the film — directed, written and produced by Ryan Coogler — was expensive, analysts noted, costing Warner Bros. at least $150 million to make and market worldwide. The studio also agreed to demands by Mr. Coogler’s representatives for unusually generous compensation. As a result, for Warner Bros. to make money, “Sinners” will need to attract substantial crowds in the weeks ahead. “It’s an excellent opening for a period horror film, except that it’s hard to call it completely successful because of its enormous budget,” David A. Gross, a film consultant, said in an email.

USA box office on the 15th weekend of 2025 is up 80% compared to last year when "Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire" was the top-grossing movie.  "A Minecraft Movie" is the top-grossing film for the second weekend in a row weekend. 

But it's down 34% compared to the peak year of 2023, when "The Super Mario Bros. Movie" ruled the box office.

Despite the presence of five new wide openers, A Minecraft Movie continued as the box office focal point with an estimated -50.4% second-frame drop, giving the overall total for all titles a 50% year-over-year raise. The King of Kings managed distinguished itself with a mainstream voice cast (Oscar Isaac, Kenneth Branagh) and perfect Easter-season timing, debuting to an estimated $19M. So far, Amazon/MGM’s The Amateur is performing less like a breakout and more like a programmer ala A Working Man’s $15.5M opening; its sophomore weekend hold will give us a much better picture as to the film’s ultimate reception in the market. Fellow newcomers Drop and Warfare, closing out the top five, performed in line with expectations, which had both in the $7M – $10M range.

At the top of the letter, which can be viewed here, Commissioner Joe Moss used the official Ottawa County letterhead and logo, sparking concerns among several residents and elected officials about whether his letter could be construed as being the directive of the county. 

A week later, commissioners Allison Miedema and Sylvia Rhodea also sent letters to Mantella using the Ottawa County letterhead, both urging GVSU to end all diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) efforts and “protect women’s sports.” 

The letters from Moss, Miedema and Rhodea – who are all part of the ultra-conservative political faction Ottawa Impact – led to debate on social media about whether they had misused the county letterhead.
