Latest avian flu research from Iowa State University

Headline:  Phys Org, 12/4/2025

Dave Roepke reports:
An ongoing outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza has affected more than 184 million domestic poultry since 2022 and, since making the leap to dairy cattle in spring 2024, more than 1,000 milking cow herds.
A new study led by Iowa State University researchers shows that the mammary glands of several other production animals—including pigs, sheep, goats, beef cattle and alpacas—are biologically suitable to harbor avian influenza, due to high levels of sialic acids.
"The main thing we wanted to understand in this study is whether there is potential for transmission among these other domestic mammals and humans, and it looks like there is," said Rahul Nelli, the study's lead author and a research assistant professor of veterinary diagnostic and production animal medicine.  [emphasis added]

Michigan DNR sends out an avian flu advisory to waterfowl hunters

This fall, the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development has reported increasing outbreaks of HPAI in commercial and backyard poultry flocks, including new detections in counties with popular waterfowl hunting destinations.
The DNR reports more HPAI detections in 2025 than were found in 2024; 130 wild birds have tested positive for HPAI in Michigan, with most detections in Canada geese, bald eagles and red-tailed hawks. Wildlife detections and pending cases are posted on the DNR’s HPAI webpage.
The disease has been found in every Michigan watershed, indicating that it has occurred throughout the state.

Avian flu kills scores of geese in rural Manitoba Canada

A Niverville resident is shocked to have seen scores of dead geese on the retention pond in his backyard — and even one on his back deck.
All of them were killed by an avian flu outbreak.
Mason Goulet noticed a handful of Canada geese on the ice, struggling to move, about three weeks ago.
"Some of them we thought were maybe frozen into the ice," Goulet said Thursday from his porch. "It turns out they were actually sick."

Canadian province of Alberta deals with worse outbreak of avian flu in years

Headline:  CBC News, 12/4/2025

Alberta’s poultry producers are working through the worst avian flu season in years.
Scott Olson has been through it twice before. The Wetaskiwin-area turkey farmer lost his 10,000-bird flock in the spring of 2022, when the wild geese migration passed over, then again when they returned in the fall.
Now he is dealing with his third outbreak and third cull.
Olson is again pressure-washing his two large barns — disinfecting them as he awaits an inspection — and preparing to restart a recertified operation after Christmas with new hatchlings.
“It’s such a bad disease,” said Olson, also a director with Alberta Turkey Producers.

MISCREANT PREACHERS: Child molestation in the Name of the Lord (#211 in a series)

Mugshot and headline:  Action News Now, 12/4/2025

According to Butte County District Attorney Mike Ramsey, 75-year-old Roger Scalice admitted to molesting a minor under 14 years old and remains in the Butte County Jail awaiting sentencing.
The charges originated in October after the Chico Police Department received a report of inappropriate contact between Scalice and a minor he had access to for more than a year. Scalice confessed to the conduct during the investigation and was arrested at his Chico home on October 27, 2025.
Ramsey stated that due to the prolonged nature of the abuse, he was charged with continuous sexual abuse of a child. Scalice could face up to 16 years in state prison. Before sentencing, a judge has ordered a mental evaluation to assess his risk of reoffending and the threat he might pose if released.

"Or do you not know that the unrighteous1 will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men who practice homosexuality nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God."  (1 Corinthians 6:9–10)
