CBS just got a nasty wakeup call. The network has a long way to go to match the numbers Stephen Colbert was bringing in with The Late Show, which aired its final-ever episode on May 24 following its shocking cancellation. 

This past Monday (June 1) offered a clearer picture of the new landscape of late-night, as both ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel Live! and NBC’s The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon returned with new episodes for the first time since Colbert said his final farewell. 

Kimmel’s show benefited the most, dominating in the 11:35 pm time slot with 2.185 million total viewers and 295,000 viewers in the coveted 18-49 demographic, per Nielsen figures. Compared to the same period last year, the show was up 53 percent in total viewers and up a massive 178 percent in the key demo.  [emphasis added]

As for CBS:

• 628,000 total viewers
• 82,000 in the 18-49 demographic
• down 65% in total viewers

On June 3, the New World screwworm was detected in a three-week-old calf in Zavala County by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Since then, the agency reported more screwworm infestations in Texas. 

The fly poses a multibillion-dollar crisis for the state’s cattle industry, which generates $41 billion a year. It could also increase already record-high beef prices nationwide. 

It’s unclear how many cases could hit Texas. Nearly 28,000 cases have been detected in Mexico since November 2024, according to Mexican officials.

On 11 June, Pleo told finance teams that AI agents would soon free them from administrative work. The next day came the Pleo layoffs: the Danish spend-management fintech had cut around 50 of its own staff, most of them in engineering and data. 

The product launch came first. 

Pleo unveiled a suite of “agentic” AI, software agents that, the company says, autonomously handle expense-policy checks, invoices, treasury monitoring and bookkeeping, escalating only the cases that need a human. “Agentic AI gives finance leaders a clear path to free themselves from administrative tasks,” chief executive and co-founder Jeppe Rindom said. A beta is due in July.

Saez, 30, was initially charged with production of child sex abuse material (CSAM) in 2023 after federal agents “conducted a cursory review” of his phone. The district attorney’s office characterized Saez’s crimes as “unspeakable.” 

“The defendant’s sexual exploitation of minors, both in person and online, is horrific, and he now faces at least 15 years in prison for his unspeakable crimes,” said District Attorney John J. Durham following Saez’s guilty plea.
