Stephen Gruber-Miller reports:
[House Minority Leader Brian] Meyer [D-Des Moines] said he's concerned about the Department of Corrections' ability to house more inmates.
The department's website as of Jan. 29 describes the state's prison system as overcrowded by 23%, with 8,619 inmates being housed, despite capacity for only 6,990.
"We need to really consider some of the expense related to that and if there’s a better way to deal with recidivism so we’re not just building more prisons,"
[Rep. Steven] Holt [R-Denison] said he doesn't believe Iowa's prison capacity is a concern.
