White House aides were reportedly “dismayed” at how Musk’s heavy-handed involvement with the nonpartisan-in-name-only Supreme Court race had turned it into a referendum on Trump’s second term and Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency, his attempt to slash federal spending and shrink its workforce, the newspaper reported.
Aides believed Republican-backed candidate Brad Schimel wasn’t going to win against Democratic-backed rival Susan Crawford, but Musk was dismissive of those concerns and instead commissioned polling showing Schimel had a chance. [emphasis added]
Schimel later drew Trump’s ire following a telephone town hall at which Trump felt the candidate couldn’t answer questions about abortion in a concise way. Trump had reportedly told advisers he was done with Schimel afterward, the Wall Street Journal reported.
