BIG PICTURE: Rural population loss in Indiana is a serious problem

In fact, the working-age population of all rural counties in Indiana peaked in 2010 with 298,000 people, decreasing precipitously to 278,000 as of 2020, according to a recent report by FWD.us. Dismally, projections indicate a further decline to 252,000 by 2040.  [emphasis added]

This isn’t speculation. We don’t have to look far to see how better immigration policies will benefit our state. In Randolph County, for example, egg production facilities that struggled to find employees found eager workers among immigrants newly arrived from Latin America and the Caribbean. Community leaders worked with educators at Ivy Tech and Ball State University to create a customized English as a second language course that began with the words and phrases new arrivals needed in their jobs.
