Experts say it's not unusual for police agencies to hold back information after a mass shooting, taking into consideration the victims and their families and working to verify information coming from multiple sources.

"I think departments sometimes are caught in the middle, where if they don’t get information out quickly enough they can be criticized for withholding information," said Chuck Wexler, executive director of the Police Executive Research Forum.
"But on the other hand, if they get information out that is wrong, then they find that they lose credibility," he said. "It’s really a balancing act."
The rumors are going to proliferate regardless. It's human nature, now given freer rein through (un)social media.
