The 'Be George Jetson' UPDATE: The Ehang 184 autonomous-flight drone

Estimated costs:  Between $200,000 and $300,000.  No precise time frame for commercialization.

Electric, self-driving, flying taxis are the future.  The wealthy and the brave can soar above the traffic.  (Houston Chronicle, 9/6/2016)
Business columnist Chris Tomlinson likes what he sees.  While the concept may seem like science fiction, a self-flying vehicle is really just a scaled up electric drone, the kind that children fly every day. Add in self-driving car technology with existing aeronautical safety systems, and the concept of hopping on a drone and tapping a flight plan onto a tablet computer doesn't seem like a big deal.

Caution, regulatory buzzsaw ahead.  "It isn't going to be that you get one under the Christmas tree, take it outside, and go flying. You're still talking about what amounts to a manned aircraft," more like a helicopter than a drone, said Mark Dombroff, an aviation attorney for law firm Dentons, who previously represented the Federal Aviation Administration and Justice Department. "They're not going to be able to sell this without having some sort of airworthiness certificate, probably experimental."

General specifications:
  • Room for 1
  • Travels at up to 60 miles per hour (Ashley sez 65 in the video report)
  • 23 minute battery life
  • 11,000 maximum elevation
