Excerpt: Teenage debt dragged Demita Gerber into the library business years ago.
Gerber, director of the Monona Public Library since December 2006, owed money to the Phoenix Public Library as a youngster. "I checked out books and I owed fines," Gerber said. "Unfortunately, I couldn't pay the fines, so they said I could work them off by working as a library page. Then they gave me a job. I shelved books."
Gerber got promoted, then went to Whittier College in California for two years and worked as a library assistant in the children's room. "I married and moved to New York City and worked in an insurance library. I went to Columbia University Library School and got a master's degree," she said.
