Greetings from Trump's America: Scott County, Tennessee, 97% white, Trumpier than it was in 2016, and sicker with the virus after Election Day

 

Scott County has always voted for the GOP presidential candidate.  Not even native son Al Gore -- on the ballot in 1992, 1996, and 2000 --  was enough to flip the county to the Democrats.

3rd-party candidates received 10.6% of vote in 1992, 8.6% of vote in 1996, 2.0% in 2016;
Segregationist George Wallace received a 17.8% of the vote in 1968)

Trump received 1,960 more votes than he did in 2016, a 32% increase in a county that has grown just 5% since 2000.  Biden received 52 more votes than Clinton did in 2016, an increase of 5%.

Trump's share of the vote increased by 3.5 percentage points.  Biden decreased Clinton's share of the vote by 2.2 percentage points.



Currently 97% white (compared to 73.5% statewide), Scott County's population has been in the 21,000-22,300 since 2000.

The owners of the Columbia Energy Center are proposing to spend $19 million to prevent groundwater contamination as they move to close the coal-fired power plant near Portage in the next four years. 
Alliant Energy, the majority owner, announced earlier this month that it would retire the plant’s two units in 2023 and 2024, saying it would be more cost-effective than keeping the 45-year-old plant running.
