Panelist Monica Whaley, a retired teacher from the Waukesha School District and board member of PFLAG, described being a member of the LGBTQ+ community in Waukesha as "terrifying."
"Throughout the years, and in the last two or three years, it's become a nightmare," said Whaley.
As reported by the Journal Sentinel last year, Whaley, a special education teacher, along with dozens of other teachers, retired shortly after the district's ban on "controversial" signage and messages, including Pride flags and the use of terms like "safe space."
Whaley's niece Sarah Whaley, a Summit View Elementary teacher, was suspended in 2021 for refusing to remove a Pride flag from her classroom.
