Dear Wisconsin State Journal editorial board, The state office building at 1 West Wilson is an example of Art Deco, not Gothic, architecture. Best, Retiring Guy

That’s why Gov. Tony Evers is wisely proposing the sale of three large office buildings Downtown: the State Natural Resources Building (also known as GEF 2) at 101 S. Webster St., the neighboring State Education Building (GEF 3), and the Gothic-styled and historic State Office Building at 1 W. Wilson St., overlooking Lake Monona.

From The Old SOB.  (Madison Trust for Historic Preservation, 7/31/2020)
The State Office Building at 1 W. Wilson St.—conceived when Art Deco design was widely popular for commercial, institutional and government buildings—took nearly 30 years to complete. From the opening of the first section in 1931 to its completion in 1959, the building retained remarkable design integrity in spite of changing tastes during the long span of its construction. [emphasis added]

The building is considered "an extraordinary representative of the Art Deco period."

The nearby Grace Episcopal Church is considered an example of Gothic architecture.
