It's all about who’s running the show.
The Republican-controlled Arizona Legislature got what it wanted, what it has been waiting for since 1973. Generations of GOP lawmakers prevented the 1864 law from being taken off the books, hoping that it would again become the law of the land.
And now, apparently, it has.
As a result, Arizona women are transported to Civil War days, at least when it comes to criminalizing abortion.
Some other things have changed, of course. Maybe that is why you’re seeing Republican candidates for offices like governor and senator trying to temper their extreme abortion positions.
It’s because unlike 1864, women now do all kinds of work. Women are independent. Women are educated. Women have hopes and dreams. They have daughters and granddaughters.
And, yes, they can vote.
