Titles in the hardcover Double D Western series and a healthy selection of Western paperbacks were already an important element of collection development when stocking the shelves of the Oshkosh Public Library's city and county bookmobiles, When I first started working in Extension Services in 1978, Louis L'Amour was exceptionally popular. I routinely wrote a "2" next to any of his titles listed in the monthly Ingram paperback catalog making the rounds among staff selectors.
I can probably count on the fingers of one hand the number of Westerns I've read. These 2 titles by Elmer Kelton made a strong impression on me.
