Elaine Stone Wagner (1931-2015) The Baldwin School

Warren Times Observer

Elaine is pictured in 1947 edition of the Dragon (third from right in top row of photos) and included in a group portrait in 1948.  (Individual photos of underclassmen didn't return as a yearbook feature until 1958.)  She attended her final year of high school at The Baldwin School in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania, which was founded in 1888 as a private, preparatory school for girls who planned to attend Bryn Mawr College.  Its enrollment remains limited to girls (pre-kindergarten through 12th grade, or "from thinking girls to accomplished women", as stated on the school's homepage.).

Elaine is the great-granddaughter of Charles W. Stone, one of Warren PA's most notable residents.   He served in the Pennsylvania Assembly and Senate prior to being elected Lieutenant Governor in 1879.  He served as Secretary of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania from 1887 until 1890, when he resigned to serve as U.S. Congressman from the 27th District, a position he held until 1899.

In Warren, this structure is known to old-timers -- that would be me -- as the "Stone Mansion", even though it has not been occupied by a member of the Stone Family since 1972.  The house was constructed in 1905 and is where Charles W. Stone lived during the last 7 years of his life.
