Together, they employ almost 1,000 people and help form the blue-collar corridor along the Wisconsin River.
But the state's hardest-working river will be less so in a few months. And for many families, a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year will be hard to come by.
Just north of here, in a pretty valley out of sight of the manmade snow that covers the ski runs on Rib Mountain, 400 people in Brokaw will be out of work by Feb. 10. Wausau Paper announced Dec. 7 that it will close the paper mill that literally started this village in 1900.
