Excerpt: It's been 21 years since Derry Public Library quadrupled its size with an addition.
Now it's time for another face-lift.
This summer, the library will undergo a renovation project to upgrade the adult services floor, including new carpeting and paint.
The library's main floor will be closed to patrons and staff for five weeks, beginning Aug. 9, after the summer reading program ends.
Public access to the library will be limited to the Children's Room entrance on the side of MacGregor Park.
The lower level children's area will remain open during renovations with a scaled-back version of adults services available.
Library officials have planned for this summer's construction work for several years, saving money from fines and gifts to fund the project.
Established in 1905, the Derry library began in the Adams Memorial Building, moving to its present site in 1927 — a gift of Derry native and philanthropist Henry MacGregor.
The addition in 1990 helped the library grow to its present 23,000-square-foot size.
A Renovation Committee formed to study ways to make the library more attractive, while serving the public better. The group became responsible for researching and organizing the project, and choosing the library's new color scheme.
