Meet the Texans on the front lines of the GOP War on Women

Headline:  Hawaii Tribune Herald, 10/6/2024
The bellwether state is Texas, the only state to impose its abortion ban as early as September 2021, even before the Supreme Court’s June 2022 ruling in Dobbs vs. Jackson Women’s Health Organization overturned the nationwide abortion right guaranteed by Roe vs. Wade in 1973.
That timing has allowed analysts to generate statistics on maternal mortality in 2022 (for other antiabortion states, those statistics won’t be available until early next year). The Texas statistics are horrific.
As compiled by the Los Angeles-based Gender Equity Policy Institute initially at the request of NBC News, they show that maternal deaths rose in Texas to 28.5 per 100,000 live births in 2022, exceeding the national rate of 22.3. “
The data are telling us that Texas is a harbinger of what is to come in states that ban abortion,” says GEPI President Nancy L. Cohen.

Trump promotes key element of Project 2025 at wackadoodle Mosinee Wisconsin rally: Eliminating Department of Education

As reported in
Neither Johnson nor Tiffany play a role in state government or the state Department of Instruction, which oversees education in Wisconsin. Jill Underly, a Democrat, was elected to lead DPI in 2021. State education policy is set by that agency and the state Legislature and governor. Wisconsin's governor, Tony Evers, is a Democrat and the former head of DPI.
"No thanks," Evers said in a post on the social media platform X, formerly Twitter.
"If someone in your family said something this bonkers, you’d take the keys away. WI, let’s come together to elect @KamalaHarris & @Tim_Walz so this doesn’t happen. Let’s protect kids, trust our educators, and make the investments to ensure kids can access to a quality education," Underly posted on X.

What's the matter with Iowa? All-male, all-white House majority leadership fights on the front lines of the GOP War Against Women

Headline:  Des Moines Register, 3/8/2014
Iowans would face more prison time for ending a pregnancy without consent under a bill that passed the House Thursday but that Democrats warn would treat embryos as people and endanger medical procedures such as in vitro fertilization.
Democrats repeatedly raised concerns that the bill could jeopardize in vitro fertilization treatment in Iowa after a state Supreme Court ruling in Alabama last month found that embryos frozen as part of the IVF process are legally protected as children.
The ruling caused several clinics in the state to halt IVF treatments.\

Chickenman Project 2025 leader Kevin Roberts blames contraception on the rise in abortion rates

The year when the largest number of abortions were performed in the US health care system:  1990.  Apparently, facts don't matter in KevinLand.

Guttmacher, 9/18/2019

Although the number of abortions is now increasing, it remains well below the 1990 peak.

Media Matters has obtained a galley copy of Heritage Foundation President Kevin Roberts’ forthcoming book, Dawn’s Early Light: Taking Back Washington To Save America. The book recently garnered headlines due to Republican vice presidential nominee JD Vance's foreword, in which he lauds the stature and influence of Heritage and suggests that his agenda can act as an “essential weapon” in the “fights that lay ahead.

New motto at Providence St. Joseph Hospital in Eureka California: First, Do Harm

Catholic hospitals participate in the GOP War on Women

Headline:  New York Times, 9/30/2024
Anna Nusslock never expected to be denied an emergency abortion by a hospital in California, a state with some of the strongest abortion rights protections.
In February, Dr. Nusslock, 36, a chiropractor in Eureka, Calif., went to the nearest emergency room, at Providence St. Joseph Hospital, after her water broke just 15 weeks into pregnancy. Doctors said one of the twins she was carrying would not survive and the other had almost no chance, according to medical records. They said that if the pregnancy was not terminated, she could face infection, hemorrhaging and threats to her future fertility.
But because fetal heart tones could still be detected, a doctor at the Catholic-affiliated hospital said the institution’s policy prohibited providing abortion unless Dr. Nusslock’s life was at risk, according to her medical records.

As shocking as this news is, it should comes as no surprise.

Russell Vought spills the beans: Donald Trump is totally on board with Project 2025

Posing as relatives of a rich conservative donor, two employees of the Centre for Climate Reporting, a British journalism nonprofit, interviewed Russell Vought, one of the authors of Project 2025.  Vought's name is being floated as the White House chief of staff in a 2nd Trump administration.

Screengrab and headline:  CNN, 8/15/2024

Choice morsels (with emphases added):
Trump has publicly rejected Project 2025 as Vice President Kamala Harris’ campaign has sought to tie him to some of the plan’s most extreme proposals. But in private, Vought said that those disavowals were merely “graduate-level politics.”
Vought said his group, the Center for Renewing America, was secretly drafting hundreds of executive orders, regulations, and memos that would lay the groundwork for rapid action on Trump’s plans if he wins, describing his work as creating “shadow” agencies. He claimed that Trump has “blessed” his organization and “he’s very supportive of what we do.”
A Trump spokesperson declined to comment on the video, but his campaign has stressed that he sets his own agenda and that Project 2025 and other outside conservative groups don't speak for him.
“It’s a big, fat stack of papers that will be distributed during the transition period,” Meadowcroft said in the video – while noting that “you don’t actually, like, send them to their work emails,” in order to avoid disclosure under the Freedom of Information Act.

Donald Trump counted on people having short memories about Project 2025. He made the right call!

Top headline:  Earth Justice
Bottom headline:  New York Times

Earth Justice reports:
Project 2025 is a blueprint for how to destroy the environment, and the Trump administration is prepared to use it. The plans that former Trump officials and Heritage Foundation staff have outlined in this document would strip away our rights to clean air, clean water, and a healthy planet.
New York Times reporter Catrin Einhorn is among the many
with short memories:

No mention of Project 2025 in her 9/16/2026 article.

Here's it is in black and white on page 542.  (red boxes added)

First Felon Donald Trump's DOGE game plan: It was all spelled out months before the election. And he lied about it over and over again.

But too many low-to-no information voters thought they'd get cheap groceries by voting for Trump.

Few voters likely expected President Donald Trump in the first weeks of his administration to slash billions of dollars from the nation’s premier federal cancer research agency. Partner logo This story also ran on CNN. It can be republished for free.
But funding cuts to the National Institutes of Health were presaged in Project 2025’s “Mandate for Leadership,” a conservative plan for governing that Trump said he knew nothing about during his campaign. Now, his administration has embraced it.
The 922-page playbook compiled by the Heritage Foundation, a conservative research group in Washington, says “the NIH monopoly on directing research should be broken” and calls for capping payments to universities and their hospitals to “help reduce federal taxpayer subsidization of leftist agendas.”

Project 2025 aims to trash education and limit educational opportunities for all

What we have here is a white Christian nationalist view of education.

Headline and text:  Brookings, 8/12/2024
Project 2025 outlines a radical policy agenda that would dramatically reshape the federal government. The report was spearheaded by the right-wing Heritage Foundation and represents the policy aims of a large coalition of conservative activists. While former President Trump has attempted to distance himself from Project 2025, many of the report’s authors worked in the previous Trump administration and could return for a second round. Trump, himself, said in 2022, “This is a great group, and they’re going to lay the groundwork and detail plans for exactly what our movement will do.”
In other words, Project 2025 warrants a close look, even if the Trump campaign would like Americans to avert their gaze.

Headline:  ProPublica, 11/1/2024
Reporting Highlights
  • Three Trips to the ER: At 6 months pregnant, Nevaeh Crain visited two Texas ERs a total of three times in 20 hours, seeking care for troubling symptoms.
