The Des Moines Register's education reporting team has published results of its new survey of Iowa’s 325 public school districts asking whether they have removed books as a result of a 2023 state law that bans nearly all books depicting sex acts from public schools. 

The findings: Book removals have gone from a relatively rare occurrence in Iowa schools to a culling that includes thousands of books. Although more than half of districts reported no removals, the remainder have removed nearly 3,400 books and two DVDs, including almost 1,000 unique titles, the team reports.
