Springlike weather made its first sustained appearance this week, and JoAnna and I took advantage by continuing to get the yard in order. Sunday’s paper contained a Bruce Company wraparound ad promoting a sale on pansy bowls, among other items.

“Maybe they’ll have individual plants for sale,” I said to JoAnna. “We should check it out.”

I’ve been eager to place a few splashes of color around the front yard, and pansies are the best option this time of year when sub-freezing temps are still likely. (Tonight’s low is predicted to dip to 29˚, not a problem, from past experience, for pansies.) We also retrieved all of the cushions out of storage, already having been cleaned last fall. Who knows when we’ll be able to invite large groups of people over, such as a dozen or so of The Usual Suspects for a fire or, much bigger yet, our annual Bastille Day bash, where attendance is usually in the 70-80 range. The latter is likely to be postponed. Even if Wisconsin flattens the curve by mid-to-late May, as recent models have suggested, we suspect many of our friends will remain hesitant to be a part of a large gathering, even when it's held outdoors.
