GOP gerrymandering spotlight on Wisconsin Assembly District 79

There is so much that is wrong with this map.  As drawn by GOP gerrymanderers, the 79th Assembly District sprawls from City of Middleton (orange box) to the edge of CIty of Sun Prairie.  Most of the City of Middleton north of Century Avenue (green box) is excluded, and once again DeForest and Windsor (purple box) are in separate district.  And what is a small piece of Madison (black box) doing here?

Here's a suggestion, one that is more compact, follows township and municipal boundaries, and add up to enough resident to fill an Assembly District.

Leave it to the GOP gerrymanderers to design a district that looks like Swiss cheese on acid.  There's a lotta crazy shit going on the 78th Assembly District.

Lisa Subeck (D-Madison) has represented the district since January 2015.

The 77th Assembly District is located wholly within the city of Madison, which is the reason for the yellow sprawl along the southern edge of the city.  A more compact district would include what's within the orange box, with the highlighted portion eliminated for population purposes.  The arrows points to the remaining islands of the Town of Madison, which will cease to exist on October 31, 2022.  The GOP gerrymanderers knew of this outcome, so why did they go ahead and change the map anyway?  Because they can.

Sheila Stubbs (D-Madison has represented the district since January 2019.

Until fish can vote, there's not much a GOP gerrymanderer can do in the 76 Assembly District except nibble away at the edges of the Madison Isthmus.  Its area shrank in size during the latest round of redistricting due to Wisconsin capital city's booming infill development.  From 2010 to 2020, Madison's population increased 16% -- from 233,000 to 270,000.

Francesca Hong (D-Madison), the first Asian-American member of the Wisconsin legislature, has represented the district since January 2021.

The 75th Assembly District covers all of Barron County and most of Washburn County in northwestern Wisconsin.   It's a strangely logical design for GOP gerrymanderers.

David Armstrong (R-Rice Lake) has represented the district since January 2021.

The 74th Assembly District sprawls across 6 counties:  Douglas (green box), Bayfield (purple), Sawyer (white), Ashland (orange), Iron (red), and Price (gray).

A more compact design would include all of the 4 following counties:  Ashland, Price, Rusk, and Sawyer.  These counties have a totals population of 59,076, just enough for an Assembly district.

Beth Meyers (D-Bayfield) has represented the district since January 2015.  She is not running for re-election.

Giant dog with gaping maw.

The 73rd Assembly Districts run helter-skelter from north to south through 3 counties:  Douglas (green box), Washburn (orange), and Burnett (red).

How about this idea?  Douglas County and its neighbor to the east, Bayfield County, have a combined population of 58,585.   Just enough to fill a single Assembly District.

What a concept, eh?

Nick Milroy (D-South Range) has represented the district since January 2009.  He is not running for re-election.

To draw the 72nd Assembly District, the GOP gerrymandering crew went to the buffet table and helped themselves to portions of Wood (orange box), Portage (green box), Waushara (red box), and Adams (purple box) counties.

Part-of-the-woodwork Scott Krug (R-Nekoosa) has represented the district since January 2011.

Diluting the vote in Stevens Point, Portage County's largest city and county seat.

GOP gerrymanderers purposefully ignore the larger Stevens Point community of interest.

Katrina Shankland (D-Stevens Point) has represented the district since 2013.

Diluting the vote in Portage County, one of Wisconsin's dozen or so reliably blue counties.

The indefensibly drawn 70th district sprawls from northeast to southwest across 5 counties:  Portage (gray box), Wood (black), Jackson (orange), Monroe (red), and La Crosse (green).

Nothing compact about, as it stretches on a diagonal across "communities of interest" for 111 miles.

Get-along-to-go-along Nancy VanderMeer (R-Tomah) has represented the district since January 2015.
