Anita's population peaked at 1,236 in 1920 and since decreased 22% since then. It now has fewer residents than it did in 1900

The small western Iowa town of Anita is divided over a baby's death and the subsequent trial and sentencing of the baby's day care provider.
The family of Luka Hodges — an 11-week-old baby who died in October 2019 under the care of his babysitter, Alison Dorsey — has a plea for the community of Anita. They're asking people who stand behind the woman convicted in his death to back off.
Dorsey was sentenced earlier this summer to 50 years in prison after the jury found Dorsey guilty of second-degree murder and endangering the welfare of the child, resulting in death.
Investigators said Luka died from head trauma while under the care of Dorsey in her Massena home.

Anita Mayor Tim Miller declined to comment and referred calls to Jim Mailander, an attorney for the city. Mailander did not immediately return a call for comment.
City Clerk Lindsay Jahde confirmed the vehicle was owned by the city and that Winther continues to hold the same job he did before the accident. The insurance payment for the damaged vehicle totaled $9,650, she said.
Perhaps Anita should take adopt the guidelines found in State of Iowa's Substance Abuse Guidelines for Supervisors.
Employees shall not report to work while under the influence of alcohol or illegal drugs. The unauthorized use, possession, sale, purchase, manufacture, distribution, or transfer of any drug or alcoholic beverage while engaged in state business or on state property is prohibited. Employees who violate this policy are subject to disciplinary action up to and including discharge.
