Ebooks, Netflix, and Library Building Projects (Part 87, Fort Myers Beach Public Library)
Fort Myers Beach library expansion contentious. (Fort Myers News-Press, 7/23/2011)
Excerpt: A $9 million expansion of the Fort Myers Beach Library is four months under way.
But a small, vocal opposition hasn’t stopped trying to halt the project, even though they are running out of time and options.
They’ve written editorials, voiced outrage at board meetings, circulated a petition and created a website. They disagree with the funding method, question the need for expansion in a digital age and believe voters should have been consulted. They’ve written the governor and complained to the state’s joint legislative auditing committee, which said the complaint had been received, but it would be at least September before action, if any, would be taken.
Still the project, which will add 18,900 square feet to the existing Estero Boulevard building, is progressing. The adjacent lot has been cleared. Underground storm drainage has been laid.
The vocal opposition: Fort Myers Beach Concerned Taxpayers.
