Located within the Birmingham metro area, Shelby is Alabama's fastest growing county, its population having increased 534% since 1970, compared to a nearly 70% decline in Wilcox County, Alabama's least healthy, since its 1900 population peak.  

Shelby is also among the 100 highest-income counties in the U.S. Its nonwhite population is 21.8% compared to 72.1% for Wilcox County.
