Oconto County Public Health copes with surge in COVID-19 cases. (Oconto County Times Herald, 9/29/2020)
When Konitzer spoke to the board, the county had recorded 729 cases of COVID-19 since the pandemic was declared in early March. By Tuesday the number had grown to 916, or another 187 in six days.
“My staff is getting completely worn out, and we’re having a hard time finding limited-term employees to help us,” Konitzer said. Earlier this year the board authorized up to five limited-term registered nurses to help with COVID-19 contact tracing, but attracting those professionals has been a challenge.
The workers call people who have tested positive and help find anyone they may have been in close contact with. “It usually takes at least an hour when we have a positive case, because they have lots of questions.”
