GET ME REWRITE: The reality is Ottawa County isn't nearly as 'brick red' as it used to be

In the 1984 presidential election, Ronald Reagan beat Walter Mondale by 60 percentage points in Ottawa County,

In 2020, Donald Trump beat Joe Biden by 21.4 percentage points.  (And take a look at the difference between 2016 and 2022.  The 'bust' of Ottawa Impact should come as no surprise.)

That's some kinda shrinkage. Democrats have good reason to have a glimmer of hope.

For more than a century, Ottawa County has been brick red when it comes to politics.
Republicans dominate elections. Democrats usually stand little chance.
Even in recent years, only one seat on the 11-member county board of commissioners has been held by a Democrat -- Doug Zylstra, who represents the city of Holland.
Now, more Democrats say they see a glimmer of hope in county government.
