Excerpt: It's taken almost two decades for Fitchburg residents to have a permanent place to borrow the latest novel or peruse reference sources. Now the Fitchburg Public Library is a ceremonial shovel of dirt away from the start of construction.
Fitchburg community leaders and volunteers on Monday will break ground on the new 38,000-square-foot library at the corner of Lacy Road and Research Park Drive near City Hall. Actual construction is expected to start in July and the library is slated to open in summer 2011.
"I think this speaks volumes to what a grass-roots community effort can do," said Marykay Zimbrick, vice president of the Library Board and co-chairwoman of the library's capital campaign.
