Iron Butterfly makes its first appearance on Billboard Hot 100 for the week ending August 24, 1968

50 Years Ago: Iron Butterfly Release Epic 'In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida'.  (Ultimate Classic Rock)

The album of the same name debuted on the Billboard Top 200 Albums chart for the week ending July 20, 1968.  It spent 140 weeks on the chart, peaking at #4.  The 17-minute album cut was drastically  reduced to 2:52 for the single version.

Iron Butterfly Stretches Its Wings On 'Fillmore East'.  (NPR, 11/25/2011)
"In-A-Gadda-Da Vida" is both Iron Butterfly's monument and its prison. But a new release called Fillmore East 1968 includes all the usable parts of two shows from April of that year and provides the best chance in decades for a fresh look at the band. The album offers fascinating reminders of what the rock 'n' roll marketplace was like almost 45 years ago. For one thing, every band — especially those just signed to a major label, like Iron Butterfly — was expected to come up with a snappy tune that might get played on Top 40 radio. "So-Lo" seems to be Iron Butterfly's not-wonderful attempt at a pop hit.

Most flooded vehicles likely to be total losses, experts say.  (Madison.com, 8/23/2018)
Car engines’ sensitivity to water and the prevalence of computers and electronics in virtually every aspect of vehicle operation make water damage particularly difficult, if not impossible, to remediate, said Paul Flogel, director of the automotive technician program at Madison Area Technical College.
Mark Follmann, a claims manager at American Family Insurance, said most of the vehicles that have flood damage will be considered total losses because of the lasting nature of flood damage. The good news, if there is any: Flood damage in vehicles is covered through comprehensive insurance plans.

Longmeadow Road is open to traffic.

I couldn't get near this sign on Tuesday.

This section of a bike/pedestrian pass is usable, if mud-crusted.  My wife and I tested it out.

UPDATE. Leah Vukmir all smiles receving her Iron Lady award from ALEC

It's true.

Original 8/21/2018 post, "Leah Vukmir, honored chairman emeritus, pledges allegiance to ALEC", starts here.

Attack ad?  Please!

The Baldwin campaign is simply showing us where Leah's allegiance lies, where she continues to maee a considerable time commitment at the expense of truly representative government.

Tammy Baldwin campaign hits Leah Vukmir on ties to business-backed group ALEC.  (Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, 8/20/2018)
So, there was little surprise Monday as Democratic U.S. Sen. Tammy Baldwin launched her first TV ad of the general election and sought to portray Republican rival Leah Vukmir as a captive of corporate interests.
The ad focused on Vukmir's ties to the American Legislative Exchange Council, where she is chairman emeritus of the board of directors.
The American Legislative Exchange Council works with corporations and conservatives to write model legislation that can be introduced in state legislatures throughout the country.

Dane County damage could takes weeks to tally.  (Madison.com, 8/23.2018)
This rushing water is on its was to Lake Mendota, thte Yahara River, and points south.  City officials are concerned about possible flooding of East Washington Avenue early next week. If that happens, Crawley said, Williamson Street will be designated an alternate route.
Public Health Madison and Dane County has also closed all beaches in the county due to elevated bacteria levels, and a slow, no-wake order is in effect for all five lakes in the Yahara chain.

After the storm in Middleton: Pheasant Branch Trail at Park Street (part 2)

One of the most astonishing views of the day.  Section of embankment washed away.

Usually, this is a sloping path that leads to a series of stepping stones that cross 8 feet of a shallow -- 3-4 inches -- stream. Not today.  Or anytime soon, I imagine.

Water everywhere.  And a dislocated bridge in the background.

Zooming in a bit.

And a pleasanter view, showing the bridge in place, from a few years ago.

The popularity of Bonnie as a baby name is graphed here.  Let's take a look at mom Henrietta.

Henrietta spent the first half of the 20th century doing a slow fade.  Her peak year was 1903 at #127.  After that, it was more of a wipe.  She hasn't been heard from since 1968.

Though never the belle of the ball, she enjoyed a slightly higher degree of popularity in the late 1800s -- #113 in the 1880s and #115in the 1890s.
