Japan reports 24th outbreak of bird flu so far this season

On 22 Apr 2026, a highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) outbreak was confirmed at a commercial laying-hen farm in a rural area of Tohoku municipality, Aomori Prefecture, in Northern Japan. 

The outbreak was detected after the farm reported concerns on 21 Apr 2026, with preliminary testing returning positive results the same day and genetic confirmation on 22 Apr 2026. 

This is the 24th confirmed outbreak (in Japanese) in Japan this season, affecting approximately 230 000 laying hens that will be culled, incinerated, and buried.
