Wisconsin Rapids 2012 Budget Process Underway

Wisconsin Rapids begins work on city's 2012 budget. (Wisconsin Rapids Tribune, 9/22/2011)

ExcerptWisconsin Rapids city staff members are making their bids this week for projects they want to include in the city's 2012 budget.

On Monday, department heads began meeting with Mayor Mary Jo Carson to pitch their requests for funding for the coming year, she said, noting she directed staff members to submit zero-increase budgets.

"We may meet with one department head twice or three times and adjust accordingly," Carson said. "As a group, we prioritize for the city in general."

The largest portions of the city's budget usually come in the form of public safety expenses -- including the police and fire departmental budgets -- and public works, which includes streets and engineering, she said. This year, those areas collectively totaled $13.2 million or nearly 56 percent of the city's roughly $23.6 million budget for 2011.

Carson plans to closely work with city Finance Director Tim Desorcy and individual department heads to develop a balanced executive budget to present to the Finance and Property Committee by early October.
