Lehigh County, Pennsylvania: Why the GOP believes that voter suppression is the only path to survival

Lehigh County went from a 20 percentage point GOP advantage in 1984 to a 7.6 percentage point Democratic advantage in 2020.

3rd party votes:  22.2% in 1992, 11.7% in 1996, 4.7% in 2016
(Alabama segregationist George Wallace
received 4.3% of the vote in 1968)

Trump received 10,728 more votes than he did in 2016, a 15% increase.   Biden received 17,174 more votes than Clinton in 2016, an increase of 21%.

Trump's share of the vote decreased by 0.2 percentage points.  Biden increased Clinton's share of the vote by 3.1 percentage points.

New York Times, 5/26/2021
But the warehouses are being built at such a dizzying pace that many residents worry the area’s landscape, quality of life and long-term economic well-being are at risk. E-commerce is fueling job growth, but the work is physically taxing, does not pay as well as manufacturing and could eventually be phased out by automation. Yet the warehouses are leaving a permanent mark. There are proposals to widen local roads to accommodate the thousands of additional trucks ferrying goods from the hulking structures.

Demographically speaking.

% of population 25 and older with bachelor's degree:
  • 29.9% - Lehigh County
  • 31.4% - Pennsylvania
  • 32.1% - U.S.
% of population 65 and older:
  • 17.1% - Lehigh County
  • 18.7% - Pennsylvania
  • 16.5% - U.S.
% of population living in poverty:
  • 11.5% - Lehigh County
  • 12.0% - Pennsylvania
  • 10.5% - U.S. (they're joking, of course)

The GOP dumbing down of America is not working in Lehigh County.
