Republican Senate Majority Leader Scott Fitzgerald earlier this week called Evers' suggestion that his hands are tied "cowardice" given the governor's past support for keeping the election in place. The lawmakers are unlikely to take the action Evers wants but haven't yet said Friday whether they'll make the changes the governor is requesting.
The ruling by U.S. District Judge William Conley will allow absentee ballots to be counted if they arrive by April 13 — six days after election day. He also gave people until Friday to request absentee ballots and loosened another voting rule as people turn to absentee voting in record numbers.
But Conley did not go as far as Democrats and voter mobilization groups wanted and declined to postpone Tuesday's election. On the ballot is the presidential primary and elections for state Supreme Court and local offices around the state
A federal judge is signaling he will not move next week's presidential primary but will expand people's ability to vote — possibly by allowing them to cast ballots by mail after election day because of the coronavirus pandemic.
U.S. District Judge William Conley will hold a hearing at 1 p.m. over what changes, if any, he should make to Tuesday's election as mayors and clerks warn that voters and poll workers could be sickened and ballots could go uncounted.
In a video conference with attorneys Tuesday, Conley indicated he did not think he could change the election date but believed he could offer significant other help for voters. Conley did not allow reporters to listen in on Tuesday's video conference, but three people familiar with his comments described them to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

New cases confirmed in Jackson and Marquette counties.
So far, the Wisconsin Clinical Lab Network has been completing 1,500 to 2,000 tests per day, the release said. The expanded partnership is expected to double that amount as supplies become available.
The projection assumes Wisconsin residents maintain social distancing, with schools and nonessential businesses closed and the governor’s “Safer at Home” order still in effect. The projections indicate the number of people hospitalized by late May could be fewer than 100 or more than 3,000, with about 1,358 the most likely number.

Without the order — which has been questioned widely by Republican lawmakers — the number of infected people in Wisconsin by April 8 will be 50 times larger than the 457 cases the state has today, Department of Health Services Secretary Andrea Palm said Tuesday.More than 101,400 new unemployment claims in 9 days as the coronavirus pandemic closes businesses. (Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, 3/24/2020)
Just Monday, around 21,250 new unemployment claims were filed, according to preliminary data released by the state's Department of Workforce Development. That same day, 12 companies filed mass layoff notices with the department signaling that more than 900 employees would be cut.

Wisconsin now has over 400 confirmed cases of coronavirus, but Monday's increase was smaller than in recent days. (Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, 3/23/2020)State Department of Health Services chief medical officer Ryan Westergaard said Monday's smaller increase may be related to fewer people seeking care over the weekend and added that there is "wide uncertainty over our number of cases.
" Still, he said, "we certainly hope it's the case that it's because the number of cases are not growing."

Wisconsin cases surpass 200, Evers asks people to leave home only if necessary. (Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, 3/20/2020)
Since Thursday's update, the state also saw its first three deaths from the virus: a man in his 50s from Fond du Lac County, a man in his 90s from Ozaukee County and a person from Milwaukee County.
Gov. Tony Evers urged people to "only leave your home if it is absolutely necessary," but stopped short of issuing a shelter-in-place order, as governors have in Illinois and California. He said he thought Wisconsin could avoid doing so.
