George Santos and Marjorie Taylor Greene, both candidates for Congressional Republican Main Character, have co-sponsored a bill with the apparent intent of banning books with LGBTQ+ characters or themes from U.S. schools.
Although the text of HR863 has not yet been uploaded to government websites, its sprawling title gives a good idea of what’s going on. The bill aims to prevent publishers from “knowingly furnishing sexually explicit material” to schools, and would strip federal funding from any school that makes such material available to students. “Sexually explicit material” is the phrase Republicans now commonly use to refer to any LGBTQ+ subjects, regardless of the presence of any actual nudity, eroticism, or sex. The bill has been referred to the Judiciary and Education committees for consideration.
